Silver wartime nickels are U.S. five-cent coins minted from 1942 to 1945 as a result of a critical shortage of nickel for military production during World War II. They have a unique composition of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, making them the only silver nickels ever produced in the U.S.. A key identifier is the large mint mark placed above the dome of Monticello on the reverse side.
