These pieces are know as Buffalo (usually) or Indian Head nickels.
Obverse (Front): Features a proud profile of a Native American chief, created as a composite of three actual chiefs: Iron Tail, Two Moons, and John Big Tree. The word "LIBERTY" and the mintage year are also displayed.
Reverse (Back): Depicts an American bison (popularly called a buffalo), modeled after "Black Diamond," a famous buffalo from the Central Park Zoo.
