The Buffalo Nickel, also known as the Indian Head Nickel, is a US five-cent coin with a profile of an American Indian on one side and a buffalo on the other:
Design
Sculptor James Earle Fraser designed the coin in 1912 to make American coinage more attractive. Fraser based the buffalo on a bison he saw in New York City's Central Park Menagerie, which was named "Black Diamond".
Composition
The coin is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel, which gives it a unique appearance and makes it durable.
Production
The US Mint produced Buffalo Nickels from 1913 to 1938 in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. The first coins were distributed in 1913 at the groundbreaking ceremony for the National American Indian Memorial in Staten Island, New York.
Replacement
The Buffalo Nickel was replaced by the Jefferson nickel in 1938 after the minimum 25-year period for the design expired.
